Are you home based?
More and more people are working from home or bringing work to their home. This is why it has become extremely important to make your home office as comfortable and inspiring as possible. If you thought that you can get away with working from your kitchen table – think again, working more than three days per week from home is a substantial amount of hours to cause long-term damage to your back and affect your overall posture negatively. Moreover, recent studies have shown that we need to separate home life and work. Working from your bed or sofa can be detrimental to your health and cause more stress and anxiety as you never “switch off”. So how do we do this right then?
Have a proper office at home
Invest in a well-designed office furniture that not only looks good but is actually comfortable. You don’t sit and work on a canteen chair for 8 hours in the office so why should you do it at home? Get an office chair that is ergonomically designed to ensure correct posture at all times. Same with your desk. If you can – get a sit/stand. Studies have shown that sit/stand desks do improve productivity, concentration and increase your creativity and overall performance. The reason for this, when standing and working, some of the body’s largest muscles are working too, so this increases blood flow to the brain. Therefore, it improves the way we feel and improves the way we work.
Is your office well-lit?
Where are you planning to have your office? Is it well-lit? The key to a great office is natural lighting. It makes a massive impact on your energy levels and productivity. If the space is small, that’s fine – make sure it’s well-lit. If you don’t have the luxury to be next to a window – get a beautifully designed lamp that will make your office look fantastic. Make sure it’s light enough though. Not having enough natural light can make you tired easily so the trick is to take regular breaks. Go to a room with a lot of natural lighting – have your coffee there for 5 minutes, alternatively go outside – terrace, balcony, garden.
What colour are you?
A successful office is colourful. It can be your chair. Make it the centre of your office. If you are into neutral colours perhaps you can put some colourful art on the walls.
Plants in the office make us more productive. It is considered good Feng Shui to have a plant on the desk/in the room/space to enhance the balance and harmony. Additionally, plants filter the air, removing some of the harmful toxins given off by modern office equipment along with carbon dioxide. They also give off oxygen, making you more alert and efficient.
